Golf Equipment Trends for 2009

By • Feb 12, 2009

Today’s equipment can make all the difference; quit getting mad and cursing your way around the golf course… buy some new clubs! If you’ve been to a demo day lately, you know that it’s a little more complicated than just walking into the local golf store and grabbing a new club or two off the rack. Most amateur golfers tend to stick with what they’ve got, whether it is due to superstition, affordability or plain old stubbornness, and all the while, they continue to get frustrated with their game.

The first thing that most PGA Golf  Teaching Professionals will tell you, is to get “properly fit,” find an established club fitter in your area and spend a little time trying the various demo clubs that are available. This will tell you a lot about your ability to swing the golf club and to find the “one or set” that best suits you; this is time well spent and potentially a huge money saver in the long run.

Modern technology has greatly reduced the penalty of the inconsistent golf swing, and today focuses primarily on ones mis-hits, this allows you to still have some control of the golf ball, even though it wasn’t hit from the sweet spot. Herewith is a bite size selection of the new equipment that is available, we share some of the manufacturer’s theories behind the changes and improvements they have made.

Speedline Driver – Adams Golf

Adams Speedline Driver

According to the company, its engineers created a design for Speedline that includes an aero-shaped crown, heel and toe scoops, and improved face-to-body transition, all of which minimize drag and improve airflow around the head, the aerodynamic shaping of the Speedline driver has resulted in three-to-four miles per hour faster clubhead speed and three to nine yards more distance. The Speedline Driver got its first victory this past October with Bernhard Langer at the Administaff Small Business Classic in Woodlands, Texas. The Speedline will ship to golf shops in early February in two versions – Standard and Draw.

X-22 Irons – Callaway

The goal of Callaway’s X-Series irons has always been forgiveness and they have set the performance standard for the industry. The perimeter weighting of the X-22s has been maximized for a moment of inertia (MOI) that’s 10 percent higher than their predecessors, meaning you get more forgiveness on off-center strikes. The ideal center of gravity position has been preserved, generating optimal ball-flight trajectories. They have also incorporated the Modified Tru-Bore design, dampening vibration for enhanced feel. The tour-inspired head shape has a slightly thinner topline and sole with a large sweet spot for improved aesthetics and forgiveness to boost your confidence.

equip-x22ironsPrecision Notch Weighting precisely positions more weight to the perimeter of the iron to create a higher MOI for greater forgiveness and stability while maintaining the center of gravity position that produces ideal trajectories and feel.

The X-22 irons include the tour inspired head shape, their engineers have taken elements designed for Tour players, like a thinner top line and narrower sole, and incorporated them into highly forgiving irons with a higher MOI so they can be played by a wide range of golfers.

Modified Tru-Bore, an advanced version of the original Tru-Bore design, the polycarbonate tip plug at the end of the shaft dampens vibration for enhanced feel and performance.

VFT Technology maximizes ball speed and perimeter weighting for more distance and forgiveness; S2H2 increases discretionary weight by removing it from the hosel and repositioning it in the perimeter of the clubhead; A 360° undercut channel maximizes perimeter weighting by moving the center of gravity lower and farther back in the clubhead, enlarging the hitting area and stabilizing the clubhead for more forgiveness.

X-22 Tour Irons – Callaway

equip-x22tourironsPerformance irons designed for accomplished golfers seeking premium feel and stability. To improve on the highly successful X-20 Tour Irons, Callaway Golf engineers added new features that allow the X-22 Tour Irons to play even better and feel even softer. Precision Notch Weighting and a new sleeker hosel combine to raise the MOI for better stability and allow the center of gravity (CG) to be moved lower and more in line with the center of the face. This generates ideal trajectories and significantly enhances the level of feel. The head shape has been refined with the thinnest possible topline while still using a 360° undercut channel, and the optimized sole width progression provides better turf interaction.

Precision Notch Weighting, precisely positions more weight to the perimeter of the iron to create a higher MOI for greater forgiveness and stability while maintaining the CG position that produces ideal trajectories and feel.

The tour proven head shape features the thinnest topline possible while still incorporating a 360° undercut channel. The blade length is shorter and the CG has been moved lower and in line with the center of the face to provide unparalleled performance with enhanced feel.

The sleeker redesigned hosel significantly improves feel and allows the hosel to be more easily adjusted to fit a golfer’s custom specifications.

The sole width progression width of each iron has been optimized based on the length and loft to provide better turf interaction through the entire set.

SQ Dymo and SQ Dymo² – Nike

The Nike Golf SQ DYMO drivers are optimized by loft and the progressive Nike PowerBow weighting puts the center of gravity where it’s needed most, in each loft. The PowerBow weighting is placed forward and higher in the low lofts for penetrating trajectory with less spin, and deep and low in the higher lofts to increase spin rates, making it easier to get the ball airborne. Optimized ball flight equals maximum distance, no matter what the loft!

equip-sqdymo2squaredNike’s Dynamic Moment of Inertia; all SQ DYMO and SQ DYMO² drivers are engineered from the ground up with the express purpose of optimizing the launch and spin by loft. Performance is maximized in every loft by varying multiple specifications from lie angle, to MOI and CG placement, to overall head size and face depth.

Square or round geometry; square geometry is about straight and long, a great sound, optimal launch by loft and it looks really good;  round geometry, repositions square mass into a round format for workable distance and control. Two distinct designs for the player who wants to swing hard at it.

UST Wide Body Shaft Design with AXIV Core; the ultra lightweight shaft creates power through speed and stability. A larger overall diameter throughout the body maintains shaft stability at impact, with AXIV Core material in the tip section for more power.
