Dustin Johnson – Rookie of the Year?

Myrtle Beach, SC. Myrtle Beach resident Dustin Johnson is a finalist for the PGA Tour’s Rookie of the Year award; the other contenders are Andres Romero, Chez Reavie, Kevin Streelman and Marc Turnesa, the winner will be announced later this month.

Johnson, the fourth-longest player on Tour, with a 309.7 yard driving average, finished an impressive 42nd on the 2008 money list. The 23-year-old rookie from Columbia, S.C., is a perfect example of just how good you have to be to make it to the PGA Tour. He leads a group of talented young players that have made huge strides on the tour this year.

With birdies on 17 and 18 at the Turning Stone Resort Championship, Johnson captured his first tour win and guaranteed a spot in the season opening winners-only Mercedes-Benz Championship (Jan. 8-11, 2009) in Hawaii. Needing just 11 putts on the back nine, Johnson’s 9 under par left him two ahead of Australian Robert Allenby, the highest ranked player in the field.

Johnson also took home his biggest paycheck, a staggering 1.08 million dollars, Along with this win; Johnson also enjoys exemption status on the tour for the next two years. The U.S. Open was Johnson’s only major this year, and he tied for a solid 24th.

Born in Durban, South Africa, Azor fell in love with the game a little late in life. He served an apprenticeship in the printing industry and then went into print sales.
